Chapter 83: Xiaowen, Well Done
Boom boom~~
The fireball collided with the sword's edge, unable to withstand the power of a mid-grade magical weapon. Even as the sword's spiritual glow dimmed, under Chu Xin'er’s control it pressed forward, slashing down on Senior Brother Wu’s head. Fortunately, he had summoned his protective aura with all his strength; though the golden sword twisted and warped upon contact, it did not break through instantly.
“Senior Brother! Senior Brother!”
Seeing Senior Brother Wu at a disadvantage, cries of alarm rang out. Gongsun Feng and Junior Brother Li activated their own magical weapons, launching an attack against Chu Xin'er, clearly attempting to “rescue Zhao by besieging Wei.”
Meanwhile, a barely visible giant mosquito flew out from the young girl’s waist and slipped quietly toward them.
After half a month of cultivation, and having gained a large sum of system coins the day before, Xiao Wenzi had consumed several top-grade Monster Gathering Pills and now reached the peak of the sixth layer in cultivation. He had also integrated newly unlocked mid-grade Stealth and Monster Concealment Talismans into his body, rendering himself invisible to everyone present.
It was no wonder: Xiao Yu’er’s cultivation was far too low, Gongsun Feng and Senior Brother Li were wholly absorbed by the battle, leaving no room for distraction. As for the mortals watching from a distance, they could never see through the nearly transparent, undetectable creature.
Boom boom boom~~
Chu Xin'er faced all three opponents at once; she dared not be careless, hastily controlling her golden sword to whirl about, dueling with their magical weapons. But Senior Brother Wu was no pushover—after catching his breath, the power of his magical weapon surged, and he cast tongues of flame and fireballs in quick succession.
With this, the advantage brought by Chu Xin’er’s mid-grade magical weapon vanished. Forced to defend herself, she expended her spiritual energy even faster to maintain her protective aura.
Seeing her benefactor at a disadvantage, Xiao Yu’er was filled with anxiety. Yet her own cultivation was too weak; any attempt to help would be futile. At that moment, her parents held her tightly, preventing her from approaching.
“Demoness, surrender now, or you will surely die today!”
Certain of victory, Gongsun Feng laughed with pride. But before his laughter faded, the young man in Daoist robes beside him let out a furious, agonized scream, and a wave of danger enveloped Gongsun Feng.
“You—”
Gongsun Feng was young, gifted, but lacked battle experience. Struck by sudden events, he turned in surprise rather than immediately activating his protective aura.
As he saw Senior Brother Li clutching his bleeding throat, tottering on the brink of collapse, the sound of air being sliced reached him—a pair of razor-sharp wing blades were already upon him.
At this critical moment, he managed only a cry of alarm, twisting his body in a desperate attempt to dodge.
Thud, thud~ Though Gongsun Feng avoided fatal blows to his heart and brow, his right shoulder and cheek were pierced by the wing blades. The agony caused him to lose control of his flying sword.
But the peril was not over. The culprit—a giant mosquito—was now a blur, rushing him. Gongsun Feng gritted his teeth and raised his protective aura.
Sizzle—the shield appeared just in time, halting the assailant’s advance. Yet the mosquito did not retreat; its two forelegs rose like blades, striking the shield viciously.
Chu Xin’er was in dire straits, and Xiao Wenzi would show no mercy to his enemies. The moment he cut Junior Brother Li’s throat with his Claw Technique, he launched a sneak attack on Gongsun Feng, rushing at him with all speed.
He had chosen to deal with Junior Brother Li first, suspecting Gongsun Feng was weaker—and indeed, his assessment proved correct, Gongsun Feng was seriously wounded.
Now, the hastily activated protective aura was torn apart by Xiao Wenzi’s full-force claws. In a flash, he slipped through the several-inch opening.
“No! Senior Brother, help me!”
Xiao Wenzi could break through the shield so easily for two reasons: first, the Blood Spirit technique was extraordinarily powerful. Though their realms differed, the disparity in cultivation was not vast. Second, Gongsun Feng was already wounded, and the shield’s strength was greatly diminished. Otherwise, breaking through would have required much more effort.
Seeing his opponent tear through the shield and rush at him, Gongsun Feng, lacking combat experience, made no effective counterattack, but instead cried out to Senior Brother Wu for help.
Yet Senior Brother Wu was also hard-pressed, unable to spare any attention to rescue him.
His comrade’s tragic death filled him with anger and grief, but with both Gongsun Feng and Junior Brother Li’s flying swords fallen and dimmed, Chu Xin’er’s Vajra Sword overwhelmed him completely.
Thud, thud, thud~~
With no protective aura to shield him, and his pleas for help unanswered, Gongsun Feng could only struggle desperately. Yet before his flailing palms could touch Xiao Wenzi, they were pierced by sharp wing blades.
The pain slowed his movements, but Xiao Wenzi, empowered by the Monster Speed technique, was a blur, wing blades carving deadly arcs.
Soon, with both heart and skull pierced, Gongsun Feng fell backward in unwilling defeat.
All this, though complex in description, took only a few breaths. Only now did a faint soul flame emerge from Junior Brother Li’s corpse.
“Hmph—trying to escape? Not so easy.”
Gongsun Feng’s spirit had perished with the destruction of his sea of consciousness. Junior Brother Li was different; his soul force was strong enough that, if he found a suitable body quickly, he might well return.
But Xiao Wenzi was no sentimental fool. With a cold snort, he spread his wings and shot toward Junior Brother Li’s soul flame.
The soul of a Qi-Refining cultivator was too weak; its flight was no match for Xiao Wenzi enhanced with Monster Speed. The nearest mortals were more than ten yards away, and before the soul could find a host, it was sliced apart by the whistling wing blades.
“This demon mosquito is formidable. But why does it seem strangely familiar to me? Could it be the little mosquito that took down that charlatan Master Lu last year...?”
Xiao Yu’er, though a cultivator, had retreated to a distance. Still, she witnessed Xiao Wenzi’s display of power and saw how he destroyed Gongsun Feng.
She had nearly married that old toad, who fancied himself worthy of a swan. Had the demon mosquito not intervened, she would never have begun her cultivation journey. Watching Xiao Wenzi fly toward Senior Brother Wu, she couldn’t help but ponder.
“Xiao Wen, well done!”
Chu Xin’er had struggled mightily against three opponents, with no time to spare for the spirit beast pouch and thus had no idea when Xiao Wenzi left or how he concealed himself for the sneak attack.
During their flight from danger, she had once asked him about his resurrection from the power of a talisman, but Xiao Wenzi had always deflected with claims of innate talent. Chu Xin’er didn’t believe him entirely, nor did she press further.
Xiao Wen had many secrets he preferred not to share, and Chu Xin’er understood.
Thus, she was not surprised by Xiao Wenzi’s sudden appearance and dispatch of Junior Brother Li, and instead praised him via secret transmission.
As for the consequences of killing Gongsun Feng and his companion, their enmity was already irreconcilable. If she did not kill them, would she wait for them to kill her? At worst, she would simply never return to Greenleaf Sect.
