Chapter 64: The Mysterious Investor
On this day, not only Ye Aotian but even Leng Tianyi found himself with a pounding headache. He had originally thought it would be easy to keep this daughter of his under control. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that after maneuvering so carefully, he would be the one left in the dark. Now, Leng Tianyi was at a loss for words; he felt increasingly unfamiliar with his own daughter. In hindsight, he knew he should never have let her take the position of president—now that her wings had grown strong, she even dared to defy his orders.
However, just as everyone’s attention remained fixed on this matter, a bombshell exploded from Star Group: a mysterious investor had suddenly injected a massive sum, aiding the completion of the final stage of their new energy project. Everyone knew that this last phase demanded immense investment, a bottomless pit where money vanished without a trace. Previously, no company in Jiang City was willing to get involved. After much speculation, people reckoned that only organizations on the level of the Four Great Families had the qualifications and resources for such a move, or perhaps some external force. Yet, recently, there had been no word of any powerful interests from the capital taking an interest in them. Naturally, suspicion shifted back to the Four Great Families. But who could guarantee things were really as they seemed?
Within the Leng family itself, there had been no shortage of people hoping to see Leng Ningxue step down. But now that she had secured this investment, it meant they had no chance at all—at least, not until she completed this project and failed to prove her worth. Even Leng Tianyi was getting anxious.
“I’ve already made it clear to you—don’t get entangled with outsiders,” he lectured. “This time, Mr. Ye’s investment was a good opportunity, but you stubbornly refused our conditions. Now you’ve gone off and found someone else to cooperate with. Do you even know what those people’s real motives are? Never mind whether your new energy project will actually succeed—even if you do manage to pull it off, do you really think you have the cunning to handle them?”
In the living room, Leng Tianyi glared at Leng Ningxue as he admonished her. He had hoped she would rein herself in a little, but since assuming her current role, she had learned to let his words go in one ear and out the other. To her, much of what he said simply wasn’t worth worrying about—including these warnings. Nothing he said could truly make her care.
“Look at yourself now! I’m seriously talking to you about these issues, but you don’t listen at all. Is it that you’ve really grown so bold that even I mean nothing to you? Don’t think that just because you control Star Group now, you’re invincible. You should know, if you fail to develop the company, everything will be taken back, and we’ll all lose face because of you!”
At this, Leng Ningxue let out a cold laugh. “So, in the end, you all just doubt my abilities. But the truth of the matter—you know it as well as I do.”
Though she had long expected this outcome, seeing the truth laid bare still stung. Yet she did not buckle under it; instead, she grew only more resolute. “I’m confident that with this investment, I can see Star Group’s new energy project through to the end. Once it’s done, it will be a complete reversal of fortunes. I know you’ve always looked down on me, thought I was just wasting my time. Well then, let’s wait and see. When everything is accomplished, I want to see what tricks you have left.”
With those words, she turned and left. Leng Tianyi could only glare at her retreating figure, his anger boiling with nowhere to go.
“Hmph, I’d like to see how much longer you can be so pleased with yourself. When you come begging for help, I won’t lift a finger.”
…
“These days, the rumor mill outside is running wild. I’ve heard that Star Group suddenly received a mysterious investment, enough to cover the final stage of their project,” Su Lan said with a smile, glancing at Lin Li beside her. “But no one knows who this big shot is. Surely, it isn’t you?”
From a few days ago, Lin Li’s aura had changed. If he had once been restrained, now he radiated a commanding presence.
“That’s still a secret for now—I can’t tell anyone,” he replied lightly. “But to me, it’s not particularly important. No matter what others might think, for us, this sort of thing is easily handled.”
There was not the slightest trace of fear in his eyes. Even though he had become the subject of much gossip, Lin Li didn’t care in the least.
“As long as you have a clear grasp of things, that’s enough. I just worry that you might misjudge something,” Su Lan said. “At this stage, it’s best not to let anyone know we have this kind of power, or else trouble will come knocking.”
She was still a little worried. For now, the Qin family had little to fear; everything was under their control, and Lin Li was more than capable of handling these so-called difficulties. But if they attracted too much attention and became a target, the situation would change entirely.
“Don’t worry. I know exactly what I’m doing—and the kind of consequences these actions might bring. But think about it: so far, no one has been able to unravel the truth behind all this.”
The higher one climbs, the more rumors swirl. With Lin Li’s current prominence, he was bound to be the focus of many. Even Ye Aotian wouldn’t let him off so easily. But Lin Li was certain that, in the current situation, he had already mastered every detail at play. There was no need to worry about trouble from Ye Aotian—he simply didn’t have the ability to challenge him.
Su Lan had always had great confidence in Lin Li. Over the years, if he hadn’t been exceptionally capable, he would never have become the man he was today.
“If you need help with anything, just say so. You can be sure I’ll do everything I can for you.”
