Chapter 142: Concealing His Identity
"Fan Yu, you mean the one who raced against you?" Mo Shu intentionally feigned ignorance to spare Elton any embarrassment.
However, Elton seemed unfazed. He shrugged and continued, "Didn't you watch the race? I lost to him."
"Ah, I did catch wind of the news that you were defeated, but this Fan Yu—I truly haven't heard of him before." Since the other man didn't mind, Mo Shu spoke his mind plainly.
"That's the strange part. Such a supreme Chinese driver, yet nobody in your domestic racing circle knows who he is," Elton said in disbelief.
"I find it strange too. Given your caliber, Elton, I never imagined you could lose to anyone."
"Sigh... I suppose it's my own fault, perhaps I grew a bit complacent. But putting that aside, that kid is seriously fast!"
"How fast?" Mo Shu asked, thoroughly intrigued. When it came to driving, there were only a handful of people in the entire world who could outpace Elton.
"Hard to say. Anyway, not long after the start, I couldn't even see him anymore." Judging by Elton's tone, he wasn't exaggerating.
"Are you sure your car didn't malfunction?"
"Impossible. Nobody knows the limits of my car's speed better than I do."
"Then are you certain you didn't just underperform?"
"Sigh, what do I have to say for you to believe me?"
"Tsk, unbelievable. It's such a shame I missed the race."
"No worries, you can watch the recording later. Besides, it's your tournament—will you really struggle to get your hands on a recording?" Elton offered words of comfort instead.
"I can't wait to see it right now. I need to study carefully how this guy won the race."
"Alright then, you go ahead and get busy. I haven't had a chance to rest since the race ended."
"Got it, catch you later."
After bidding Elton farewell, Mo Shu placed a call to Wang Yu.
He told Wang Yu to stay put in the office while he headed over to the broadcasting department so they could review the footage of Fan Yu together.
Had he not heard Elton describe the race firsthand, Mo Shu would never have believed that a driver named Fan Yu could be this formidable.
To make someone like Elton lose sight of his taillights—what level of driving proficiency did that require?
Could he himself pull it off?
Or would any of the other Heavenly Masters dare to accept such a challenge?
It was simply too difficult!
Even with all system skills activated, Mo Shu wouldn't dare guarantee he could achieve that feat.
The broadcasting department must have received Wang Yu's instructions, as a young woman holding a portable hard drive was already waiting outside the door.
"Master Mo, this is copied directly from the DVR. Please take it."
"Great, thank you very much."
"No need to be polite, Master Mo, it's my duty."
"Oh, by the way, did you capture anything outside the track itself? For instance, did this Fan Yu have frequent contact with anyone?"
"I wouldn't know about that, Master Mo. Anyway, everything is on the hard drive. From the start of today's races until Director Wang called just now, all the video content is in here."
"Alright, sorry to trouble you. Thanks."
"No trouble at all. Let me know if you need anything else. Goodbye."
"Bye."
Taking the hard drive, Mo Shu hurried all the way back to Wang Yu's office.
The proper races hadn't tired him out this morning, but all this running back and forth left Mo Shu drenched in sweat.
"Hurry, let's watch. I heard this Fan Yu is insanely good."
"I heard it too. How on earth did such a massive piece of news break during the time it took me to answer a single phone call? Honestly..."
"Stop complaining and let's just watch." Mo Shu picked up the remote and pressed play.
"Oh right, Old Wang, do you have Fan Yu's registration profile? Let me see it."
"Got it, it's on the computer. Hang on, I'll print it out for you."
While fast-forwarding through the race footage in real time, Mo Shu waited for Wang Yu to print Fan Yu's records.
Then he heard Wang Yu let out a heavy sigh, looking at Mo Shu with a grievance-filled expression.
"What's wrong?"
"This guy's registration profile is completely worthless."
"Really? Let me see."
Mo Shu pulled a swivel chair over to sit next to Wang Yu and turned the monitor toward himself.
Wang Yu was right; calling the file worthless was an understatement—it was practically empty.
Aside from basic information such as name, gender, age, and place of origin, every other required field was left entirely blank.
As for racing honors and competition history, forget about it—there was nothing of any value whatsoever.
"How did this guy even pass the registration screening? Didn't we give strict instructions for contestants to fill out their profiles in detail?" Mo Shu wondered aloud.
"You're asking me, but who am I supposed to ask? There are over a hundred contestants here; when would I have the time to audit every single form?" Wang Yu complained aggrievedly.
"Look at this, even the ID number isn't filled in. Parents' names and contact information should at least be there. Even assuming he somehow doesn't have those, there's an emergency contact field right at the bottom, and that's blank too." Mo Shu pointed at the screen.
"What are you getting at?" Wang Yu didn't follow.
"For a profile like this to pass registration, someone in our company must have looked the other way. Moreover, I suspect this guy is deliberately concealing his identity." Mo Shu stated his speculation outright.
"Concealing his identity? It's just a auto race, is that really necessary?" Wang Yu still didn't understand.
"If he's here to cause sabotage, then I'd say it's very necessary," Mo Shu concluded boldly.
"Who would want to sabotage our tournament?" Wang Yu began gathering his thoughts.
"Aichi Xiang? Doesn't really seem like it," Mo Shu shook his head.
"Could it be someone from the Six Realms Heavenly Masters? Did they deliberately throw the match to let this Fan Yu win?" Wang Yu guessed.
"Please, Elton just lost—what good did that do anyone? Besides, what possible benefit could Elton gain from this? It's embarrassing enough in front of the media." Mo Shu still felt that line of reasoning was off.
"Then? Guan Mie?" Wang Yu was practically ready to run through every single competitor on the list.
"My friend, judging by Elton's description, even Guan Mie might not be able to outrun this kid. Is he seriously going out of his way to hire someone just to humiliate himself?" Mo Shu still doubted it.
"If that's the case, that leaves only the Vermin family." Wang Yu brought up the biggest boss they had encountered so far.
"Vermin, Vermin... Could their family be targeting us again? They really are like ghosts that refuse to scatter," Mo Shu muttered to himself.
"But if the Vermin family sent someone over, why wouldn't they send Aichi Xiang?"
"Are you an idiot? Would we even accept Aichi Xiang's registration?"
"Well, they could have sent someone from the Six Realms Heavenly Masters."
"Ever since the Rusrein incident, the stance of the Six Realms Heavenly Masters has been up in the air."
"Hmm~~~" Wang Yu nodded. "If the Vermin family really did send a new face to make trouble, how do you suppose we should respond?"
This question effectively stumped Mo Shu as well. After all, none of their previous hypotheses had any concrete evidence to back them up, and whether Fan Yu was friend or foe remained entirely unclear.
Yet Fan Yu's suspected attempt to conceal his identity forced Mo Shu to question his motives.
Still, at least one thing could be confirmed for now: if Fan Yu kept winning, he would inevitably end up competing against Mo Shu on the same track.
"Sigh, let's stop guessing blindly. When Fan Yu faces off against me, I'll test this kid myself. Maybe everything will become clear then." Mo Shu scratched his head with an exasperated expression.
