Chapter 133: The Perilous Mountain Road
On the outskirts of Nanshan City, along the mountain road leading up Qingyun Mountain’s Yunding Peak, a Crazy Bull RT500 and a retro-styled S15 tore toward the summit, one following the other.
Mo Shu carried Wang Yu, while Mo Shanhe carried Tang Xiuxian.
To an outsider, the speed at which the two cars were traveling far exceeded what any ordinary person could endure.
In reality, however, the four of them chatted and laughed all the way up.
“I came to Yunding Peak once before. All I remember is that there were countless bends and steep slopes. I never realized the place was also nestled between mountains and water. The scenery is fantastic.” Mo Shu chatted with Wang Yu as he drove.
“Indeed. When we entered the mountains just now, I saw the construction crew we hired transporting the modified equipment and materials needed for the races. Before long, this place will be more than just a racing mecca in China. It’ll also become a scenic tourist destination.” Wang Yu was clearly excited, already imagining the wonderful life that awaited them.
“Haha, don’t forget to build a dormitory for our racing team. We can come here for vacations whenever we have some free time.” Mo Shu was beginning to fall in love with the place as well.
“Of course. I’ve already seen the blueprints. The design company thought of that long ago.” Wang Yu was extremely satisfied with the track-design firm his father had recommended.
“Mm-hmm. When the Wang family makes a move, one is worth three, huh? Ha-ha.” Mo Shu laughed, then glanced at the rearview mirror and continued, “I didn’t expect the old man to still have such good driving skills. He’s been clinging right behind us the entire way.”
From the passenger seat, Wang Yu could not see behind them through the mirror, so he leaned forward and turned his head.
The S15 was indeed following very closely, especially through the bends.
Although the S15 was clearly inferior to the RT500 in acceleration when exiting a corner and entering a straight, there were hardly any long straights on Yunding Peak. As a result, the RT500’s advantage in power was not especially obvious.
“No, I’m going to push harder. I can’t let the old man keep closing the gap.” Mo Shu suddenly grew serious and settled into a fully focused driving posture.
He switched the transmission into manual mode and buried his foot in the accelerator. The RT500’s engine immediately roared, and its exhilarating acceleration slammed the passengers back into their seats.
Mo Shu’s nerves tightened. He did not dare relax for even a moment.
He knew very well that driving aggressively on a mountain road was completely different from the circuit and rally races he had participated in before.
Altitude, elevation changes, and the steepness of the slopes were one set of problems.
The design of the road surface and the layout of the corners presented another.
The mountain road had not originally been built for automobile racing. Many of the hairpin bends were so tight they could practically be described as folded in half. Shortly after they first entered the mountains, they encountered a compound section consisting of three consecutive hairpins followed by four zigzag turns. It was nothing short of a nightmare for mountain-road racers.
The battered guardrails along that stretch, along with the crisscrossing, black, chaotic skid marks on the asphalt, were enough to set anyone’s imagination running.
What stories or accidents had taken place here in the past?
And they were still climbing. If they were descending instead, the long, steep slopes combined with one sharp turn after another would probably leave even an experienced top-tier driver like Mo Shu unable to think of a good way to handle them.
Perhaps that was precisely why it could be called the Yunding Peak Downhill Race. The whole point was the danger and the thrill.
After more than a dozen corners, Mo Shu was astonished to find that his father’s S15 was still clinging tightly to the rear of his car.
What incredible tenacity.
No, it was more than that. What phenomenal skill!
Mo Shu swallowed. For the first time, he realized that his father was considerably stronger than the opponents he had encountered on the racetrack.
Why?
How could he keep up with me?
I’m already giving it everything I have!
Just as Mo Shu drifted into thought, a black sedan came hurtling down the mountain in the opposite direction.
Neither side had expected to encounter another car taking a bend at such high speed in such a remote mountainous area. Before either vehicle could react, their front ends grazed past one another and their rear ends swept by in turn, missing each other by a hair.
“Damn, that was close!” Fortunately, it had only been a scare. Wang Yu let out a breath.
“Yeah, it was dangerous. But I get the feeling the other driver has some racing skill. Otherwise, we would have collided.” As he spoke, Mo Shu watched the S15 through the rearview mirror to make sure it was safe.
“We’re almost at the summit. Let’s stop and rest for a while. Sitting in the car all this way has left my back and legs aching.” Wang Yu felt as though his lower back and buttocks had gone numb, and he could not wait to get out and stretch.
“Sure. My father and Uncle Tang have caught up too. They seem fine.” Mo Shu nodded and accelerated once more.
In less than a minute, they reached the summit of Yunding Peak. The view suddenly opened before them, and the exhilaration of looking down upon the surrounding mountains arose naturally.
They found a relatively level patch of ground and parked. Mo Shu and Wang Yu hurried out to stretch their already stiff limbs.
“Ow! Even young people can barely endure this, let alone these old backs of ours.” Mo Shanhe and Tang Xiuxian grimaced as they moved, the joints throughout their bodies cracking nonstop.
“Uncle Tang, my father’s skills haven’t declined at all, have they? He stayed right behind me the entire way without getting shaken off.” Mo Shu had been too young to witness his father’s gallant days on the racetrack, so he could only ask Tang Xiuxian about them.
“Hmph. His skills are still there, but he’s definitely declined. Back in the day, I didn’t even want to ride in his car. Do you know why?” Tang Xiuxian was brimming with interest now that the old subject had been brought up.
“Why?”
“Because I was jealous! Jealous of his driving! Angry that I wasn’t as good as him!” Tang Xiuxian looked rather disgruntled, yet his eyes were filled with pride.
“Was he really that good? Still, my father never managed to beat me.” Mo Shu smiled.
Mo Shanhe curled his lips when he heard that. “Heh. Once we’ve rested for a while, we’ll have a proper race. As your father, I have to teach you how to handle the downhill course.”
“No problem. Your son will see it through to the end.” Mo Shu answered half jokingly, still refusing to admit defeat.
Although he sounded confident, Mo Shu felt less certain than ever deep down.
The RT500 was several levels above the S15 in terms of power. If he could not shake his father off while climbing, then the downhill race was even harder to predict.
“You two had quite a blast driving today. You have to make it up to me when we get back. Take me out for hot pot!” Tired from the ride, Tang Xiuxian began laying down his conditions.
“Haha, no problem. I’m only worried that riding in the car will make you sick and ruin your appetite, Uncle Tang!”
“Impossible. Hot pot is my life!”
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”
The four of them were in high spirits, laughing and chatting, when a captivating exhaust note rose from below and surged toward the summit.
Just from the sound, they could tell that the car below had been heavily modified.
Following the noise with their eyes, they saw that it was the black sedan from earlier, now returning. It charged toward them aggressively, looking very much as if it had come looking for trouble.
As it drew closer, the sedan’s window rolled down. A young man leaned out and cursed viciously, “How the hell were you driving just now? If you’re looking for death, go find it somewhere else!”
