Chapter 127: Lucky Partners
The pair successfully submitted their ten tokens, and the production team handed them another task card. It read: "Proceed to Nanshan Extreme Park and complete the high-altitude challenge."
Mo Shu calculated the distance and muttered to himself that the production team was truly ruthless; each stage of the task was located at opposite ends of the region. The guests had first trekked from the far north to the far south, and now they were being sent from the south to the far west. With Lin Meinv’s sprained ankle making her immobile, Mo Shu began to worry about how they would manage to transport both person and wheelchair.
However, after a morning spent navigating setbacks, their luck seemed to be turning. Just as Mo Shu was staring into the distance, lost in thought, an American-made pickup truck pulled up right in front of them. The young male driver rolled down the window and greeted them enthusiastically: "Are you the famous star Lin Meinv? You’re filming a reality show, right? Do you need a lift?"
"Yes, we do!" Lin Meinv replied before Mo Shu could even speak.
"Alright, hop in!" The driver was a man of action; he jumped out, helped Mo Shu get Lin Meinv into the cab, then grabbed the wheelchair and tossed it into the spacious cargo bed of the American truck.
Beyond their dual utility for passengers and cargo, American pickups are known for their power, space, and wide visibility, but their most impressive features are their massive frames and high ground clearance. For a man of average height like Mo Shu, getting into the cab was almost a climbing exercise.
The young driver didn't seem particularly talkative. Aside from greeting Mo Shu before setting off and mentioning that his wife was a fan of Lin Meinv, there was almost no idle chatter along the way. This rare, quiet transit gave Mo Shu and Lin Meinv a much-needed moment of relaxation. Just before they arrived, Lin Meinv, who had been gazing out the window, turned to Mo Shu and asked, "Have you heard this song playing? It’s my lucky track."
Mo Shu listened carefully but shook his head with a touch of regret. He didn't seem to recognize it, but the melody was soft and graceful, like a sweet, clear spring flowing through a lush forest.
"What a coincidence! I didn't expect you to like this song too. It’s actually my wife’s and my favorite. It’s a pity you won't have time to hear the whole thing; we're almost at the Extreme Park." The young driver looked a bit disappointed, perhaps because they had just found some common ground before one party had to depart.
"Right, thank you. Just stop wherever it's convenient," Mo Shu said, remembering to thank their helpful friend.
"Yes, thank you so much. And thank you for the music; it made me feel much more relaxed," Lin Meinv added with a sweet smile.
When the truck came to a stop, Mo Shu jumped out first, only to find the young driver had already readied the wheelchair. He really was a thoughtful young man, though his demeanor was quite different from the hulking pickup he drove, Mo Shu mused.
Having rested well, Lin Meinv’s foot seemed a bit better. Before Mo Shu could offer his support, she hopped out of the cab on her own, bouncing toward the back of the truck on her good foot.
"Senior, are you forgetting the pain now that the wound is healing?" Mo Shu rushed over to help.
"Haha, hearing my lucky song put me in such high spirits!" Lin Meinv said dismissively.
"Really? Is the power of music that magical? It seems I need to find a lucky song for myself as well," Mo Shu said, nodding as if inspired.
The young driver, closing the truck bed, laughed and said, "At first I thought you were just being polite, but I see you really do love this song, Senior Lin."
Hearing this, Lin Meinv sensed a connection between the driver and the music. "It feels like your words have something to do with this piece. Could it be..."
"That’s right, my wife wrote it," the driver said with a proud expression.
"My goodness! You’re not joking, are you? Is your wife the composer Xiao Man?" Lin Meinv’s eyes widened in shock.
"Of course not. Xiao Man is the pen name she uses for her work. And, I might as well tell you, the performer of this piece is yours truly."
"Oh my god! That’s incredible! Leave me your contact info—I must visit you two later! We’re in a rush to film right now, so we can’t talk more! See you!"
Lin Meinv excitedly took the business card, waving goodbye as Mo Shu pushed her away. Mo Shu chuckled, "You’ve really scored this time—not only are you in a better mood, but you’ve also made a like-minded friend."
Lin Meinv couldn't calm her excitement. "It’s just—my goodness, it’s fate! Let me tell you, Mo Shu, I’ve been a fan of Xiao Man for ages, but I could never find any information about her."
"Haha, who would have thought that our famous star Lin is also a fan of someone else?" Mo Shu laughed.
"Of course! Why can’t I have idols? And let me tell you, this song is magical for me. Every time I hear it, good luck follows soon after." Lin Meinv said with a beam.
"Oh, that’s impressive. I hope I can bask in your reflected glory!" Mo Shu nodded, pretending to be fully convinced.
Lin Meinv straightened her posture in the wheelchair, looking expectant, as if she were waiting for her good luck to arrive immediately. Little did she know, by the time Mo Shu was halfway through the high-altitude challenge, Lin Meinv would realize that this young race car driver, Mo Shu, was the very good luck heaven had sent her.
The challenge was thrilling and terrifying—a single wooden plank about 50 meters long suspended 30 meters in the air. The guests had to ride bicycles across the plank, with one star from each team completing the outward leg and the other the return leg.
Lin Meinv had a severe fear of heights. Just watching the two superstars from the "Heavenly King" team attempt it was enough to make her break into a cold sweat and her legs turn to jelly. The first to go, Heavenly King Zhang, made it across smoothly, but Zheng the Lion, who everyone thought had better balance, lost his center of gravity on the return trip. His bicycle shattered under the 30-meter drop, and Zheng hung in mid-air, suspended by his safety harness, looking apologetic.
This terrifying sight made Lin Meinv cover her face and shriek; being up there herself would have scared her out of her wits. Because of her foot injury, Mo Shu boarded the lift, intending to complete the task alone. Lin Meinv looked on, sighing inwardly.
Mo Shu, thanks to your arrival, I don’t have to fall behind in the show, and I can avoid this harrowing, nerve-wracking challenge. You truly must be the greatest stroke of luck heaven has ever bestowed upon me!
