Chapter 151: I Quit
Lin Fang’s expression turned somewhat unsightly at Xu Fei’s words. Right in front of Xiao Lan, Xu Fei was reprimanding her without sparing any face.
"Xu Brother, you..."
"What about me? Don't forget what you said to me when you agreed to come and experience real life. If you can't handle it, say it now, and I can send you away immediately, right this instant."
"I won't!"
Lin Fang stubbornly tilted her head.
She looked at Xu Fei and smiled with a sly look in her eyes.
"Don't think you can scare this young lady away so easily. Look, didn't I make it through the whole night?"
"You didn't sleep at all. I want to know how much longer you can keep this up."
Xu Fei looked up and down at her with a hint of pity.
"Why don't you just surrender, quit right now, and from now on, go back to studying properly? As for that matter your parents mentioned, I can actually help you mediate with them."
Lin Fang's expression, however, tightened.
"Does that mean I won't be able to see you ever again?"
Xu Fei was taken aback by the question.
"Ah..."
He said, pointing toward Xiao Lan.
"Hey, you, bring me a bowl of millet porridge, and oh, a steamed bun too."
His act of changing the subject forced even Xiao Lan to admire his evasion. As she turned toward the kitchen, she couldn't help letting out a soft chuckle.
"Xu Brother, do you take me for a fool?"
Lin Fang grabbed hold of Xu Fei's sleeve.
"Can't you see everything I've done and what it's for?"
She said, gesturing toward the breakfast shop, which she had cleaned up until it looked almost like her own boudoir.
Just then, a few regular breakfast customers pushed open the door and stepped inside the shop.
Upon seeing the current state of the breakfast place, however, they all wore expressions of utter astonishment.
"Is this really the breakfast shop?"
"That's right, didn't you see Xiao Lan?"
"I say, Xiao Lan, has your boss had a sudden change of heart?"
Xiao Lan smiled gently.
She placed Xu Fei's millet porridge and steamed bun in front of him, then walked over to the regular customers.
"You're mistaken. We have a new waitress here, and she cleaned all of this up entirely by herself."
"Well, that waitress is worth every penny."
"Yeah, yeah! Where is she? We need to meet her."
Xiao Lan smiled and pointed toward Lin Fang, who was standing to the side with her lips pouted in anger. "Look over there. That's our new waitress."
"My, what a fiery temper! Why is she looking so upset bright and early in the morning?"
"She's quite a pretty little thing. By the way, what's her name?"
Since the men were regulars, they naturally acted quite familiar.
"Xiao Fang."
Seeing that Lin Fang remained silent, Xiao Lan hurriedly introduced her with a smile.
"Oh, nice name. She's good-looking and keeps things clean. I wonder if she's taken yet? Would you like Big Brother to introduce someone to you?"
Knowing that Lin Fang was still angry, Xiao Lan glared at the customer who spoke.
"You've been around for so long, how come I never see you introducing anyone to me?"
"You?"
The customer shook his head repeatedly.
"It's not that I don't want to, it's that I really don't dare!"
"Pfft!"
That remark so infuriated Xiao Lan that she reached out and pinched him hard.
The man chuckled.
His laughter sounded inexplicably delighted.
Lin Fang frowned slightly.
Taking it all in, Xu Fei lowered his voice and said, "Well? Did you think working here just meant wiping tables and tidying up? You have to deal with all these customers one by one. If you keep pulling a long face like that, Brother Liu's breakfast shop will be out of business sooner or later."
"I..."
Although Lin Fang knew Xu Fei was right, she couldn't bring herself to cross that mental hurdle just yet.
Seeing the look of dilemma on Lin Fang's face, Xu Fei felt a secret sense of satisfaction.
He waved his hand at Xiao Lan.
"Xiao Lan, come here for a moment."
Xiao Lan smiled and greeted the customers, quickly noting down their orders before walking over to Xu Fei.
"Fei Brother, what is it?"
Xu Fei smiled and said, "When customers arrive, you need to let Lin Fang go and greet them. Just leaving her standing there like a wooden post won't do."
As he spoke, he secretly gave Xiao Lan a wink.
Naturally, Xiao Lan understood Xu Fei's intention.
She smiled and nodded.
"Right, Fei Brother, I was just showing Xiao Lan how it's done."
With that, Xiao Lan turned to look at Lin Fang.
"Xiao Fang, when people come in later, remember to go forward and greet them. I'm going to the back to help Fat Brother for a bit."
She blinked at Xu Fei as she spoke.
The two of them exchanged an understanding smile.
Their actions and intentions certainly did not escape Lin Fang's notice.
"Hmph!"
With a cold snort, Lin Fang stubbornly took the apron hanging on the wall and tied it around her waist.
"You just sit here and eat slowly. If you need anything, just shout, my good Xu Brother!"
She shot a disgruntled remark at Xu Fei before turning on her heel and walking toward the customers who had just offered to play matchmaker for her.
"Brothers, please wait a moment. Sister Lan is getting your orders from the back."
"No rush, no rush. Sit down with us, little sister, let's chat for a while."
Seeing Lin Fang take the initiative, the men all broke into broad grins. Having such a pretty young girl by their side was far more appetizing than any food.
"How old are you?"
"Where is your hometown?"
"What kind of boys do you like?"
At that moment, those grown men were acting even more gossipy than neighborhood housewives swapping tales.
In truth, Lin Fang was already deeply annoyed.
However, thinking of how Xu Fei was watching her make a fool of herself from the sidelines, she gritted her teeth and answered their questions one by one.
"Xiao Fang, you're a good person. If I were a few years younger, I'd definitely pursue you myself."
Seeing that the conversation was flowing and Lin Fang was being quite cooperative, the men grew bolder.
Lin Fang glared at the man who had spoken.
Sensing that she might be angry, the man looked momentarily startled.
"Big Brother, what are you saying? What do you mean by a few years younger? Even now, it wouldn't be impossible for you to pursue me, would it?"
As soon as those words left her mouth, all the men at the table burst into laughter.
This girl was far too bold.
Like cats that had caught the scent of fish, the men smiled so broadly their eyes vanished into slits.
"Little sister, Xiao Fang, since you put it that way, are you free tonight? After work, let me treat you to dinner."
Lin Fang smiled and nodded.
"Sure. I've grown quite sick of eating the food at this lousy breakfast shop anyway. Come find me tonight."
"Great, great!"
Seeing how easily Lin Fang agreed, the other men protested.
They raised their hands in objection.
"Hey, sister, since you're giving him a chance, give us one too!"
"Exactly! We've got nothing but praise for you, you know!"
"Alright, alright, one at a time. I can't be split in half, can I?" Lin Fang said with a smile.
Seeing that Lin Fang was willing to go along with it, the men exchanged glances.
"Then how about tomorrow for you?"
"Right, right, I'll take the day after."
"What gives? You take the day after? I wanted the day after too!"
"You're older, of course you should yield to me."
"Damn it, how much older am I than you? Our birthdays are in the exact same month, that doesn't count, no way."
Watching those men argue over scheduling turns to take Lin Fang out for dinner based on their birthdays, Xu Fei almost spat out a mouthful of millet porridge.
