Chapter Fourteen: The Good Police Officer
The Qin family was wealthy. That was an undeniable fact. In the past, when Qin Yang was alone, he might have hesitated to make such a claim, but now he could declare to the world in all seriousness, "My family is rich!"
“Captain Sun, could you come out for a moment?”
Suddenly, a policeman poked his head into the room. Sun Qi took a deep breath and strode out of the interrogation room, full of authority. Qin Yang, meanwhile, lounged back into his chair, humming the lyrics to “Twelve Months in Prison.” The two officers left to watch over him flushed with embarrassment at his laid-back manner. Amused by their discomfort, Qin Yang chuckled inwardly. “I’m actually a rather easy-going person. Your deputy captain is just a bit unreasonable.”
“Man, I have to say, you’re something else.” One of the officers couldn’t help but give him a thumbs up, sincerely impressed. After all, all the evidence against Liu Shuang had been provided by Qin Yang alone, which earned him some goodwill. That bastard Liu Shuang had become a public enemy—everyone wanted to see him punished. These two young officers, full of idealism, naturally didn’t believe Qin Yang had committed burglary; who could trust a word out of Liu Shuang’s mouth? Most likely, he was trying to frame Qin Yang before dying, turning an upstanding citizen into a scapegoat.
Meanwhile, Sun Qi had just stepped out of the interrogation room when her subordinate hurriedly reported, “Something big just happened. Yang’s Jewelry was robbed. It should be the jewel thieves that have been drifting around recently.”
“What? Assemble the team at once!” Sun Qi’s heart pounded with anxiety, and she immediately began to rally her people.
“Some of our guys have already arrived, but the culprits have escaped,” her subordinate said, frustrated. “They’re incredibly mobile, vanishing without a trace.”
“Damn it!” Sun Qi had no time for further explanation and shouted, “Get the detective team together immediately!”
Seeing her fiery temper, the subordinate could only smile wryly. “By the way, Qin Yang’s lawyer has arrived. He’s in the office. You should probably see him.”
“What for? There’s a crisis out there—I don’t have time to waste on a lawyer. Tell him Qin Yang is free to go.” At this moment, Sun Qi had lost all interest in Qin Yang; the robbery was much more pressing.
The subordinate hesitated. “Captain Sun, you really should go. If the lawyer files a complaint, it could get messy. Not long ago, you crippled a rich kid, and if this lawyer makes trouble…”
Sun Qi gritted her teeth and reluctantly nodded.
She was led by her subordinate to the office, where a middle-aged man with gold-rimmed glasses sat calmly on the sofa.
“Captain Sun, this is Lawyer Wang,” her subordinate quickly introduced.
Lawyer Wang smiled, nodded, and extended his hand. “Hello, I’m Mr. Qin Yang’s attorney.”
Hearing that, and remembering the urgent case outside, Sun Qi’s face grew even more sour. This kid was far too arrogant—any goodwill she’d had for his cooperation was long gone. She snorted and sat down. “You can take him with you.” After all, there was nothing more they could do with Qin Yang, and there was no reason to make him suffer here. If he could afford a lawyer, maybe his claims about his family's wealth were true.
“There’s no rush,” the lawyer replied, his placid smile making Sun Qi itch to slap him—especially now, with her nerves already frayed. But she knew exactly what consequences that would bring. Sipping her tea, she led Lawyer Wang to the interrogation room. When she entered, she found the two officers she’d left behind sharing cigarettes with that damned rascal, the room thick with smoke.
The two officers jumped up in alarm, hastily snuffing out their cigarettes. Qin Yang, unhurried as ever, said sheepishly, “There’s no ‘No Smoking’ sign here, so I figured it was allowed.”
Sun Qi glared fiercely at her subordinates, then turned to Qin Yang, gritting her teeth. “You’re free to go.”
“Thank you.” Qin Yang raised his eyebrows in acknowledgment. Lawyer Wang nodded cautiously and led Qin Yang out of the police station. Not far away, sitting on the curb, Wang Zhibing was smoking a cigarette. It was hard to imagine that this slightly sleazy-looking man was one of Southeast Province’s most renowned tycoons. When he saw Qin Yang walk out unharmed, he quickly opened the car door.
After exchanging a few words with Wang Zhibing, Lawyer Wang took his leave.
Qin Yang tossed a black backpack into the car and slouched in the seat. Wang Zhibing eyed it curiously. “What’s that?”
“Money. A million,” Qin Yang replied lazily, stretching.
“Young master, you really are something. You made a million in just a few days?” Wang Zhibing was delighted—this was Qin Lie’s son, making a fortune from nothing.
Qin Yang rolled his eyes. “Don’t flatter me. I took it by force—but I did it fair and square.”
Having already heard some of Qin Yang’s story, Wang Zhibing was startled. “Young master, you really took this money from Liu Shuang? Was that necessary? It’s just a million—don’t let the police get on your case. It’s not worth it.”
“The police? Hmph. Liu Shuang’s been running rampant for years; I refuse to believe the cops have been blind. My poor sister was only sixteen. If I don’t drag Liu Shuang and his backers out into the open, how can I face Xiaolan and claim I’ve brought those bastards to justice?” For an instant, Qin Yang’s eyes grew icy cold. In their dark depths, a chilling glint flickered, making Wang Zhibing shudder beside him.
Wang Zhibing didn’t know that after absorbing Liu Qishan’s memories, Qin Yang’s hatred for Liu Shuang had grown so intense that he wished the man’s whole family could be wiped out. Especially since Gao Xiaolan hadn’t even gotten to see her father one last time, his fury burned all the hotter.
After a long silence, Wang Zhibing asked, “So you went in there yourself to investigate? Did you find anything?”
Qin Yang rubbed his temples. “Sun Qi’s two subordinates were easy to fool, but they didn’t know much. What I do know is that someone high up in the police force is involved with Liu Shuang, though it’s well hidden. Sun Qi herself is decent—an upright, hot-tempered, straightforward cop. If I use her connections wisely, I might be able to uncover more. Anyway, take me home.”
“Alright.”
Wang Zhibing had no objections to Qin Yang’s urgent quest for justice on Gao Xiaolan’s behalf. He knew his young master well: arrogant, yes, but with a streak of kindness. What delighted him most, though, was Qin Yang’s mindset. Though his methods were still raw and risky, it was enough to warm Wang Zhibing’s heart—this was only just the beginning.
