Chapter 52: Sun Gui Demands Money! The Truth Behind His Daughter’s Severe Hemorrhage
Li Junsheng’s face grew even darker, while Sun Gui, standing by, was quick-witted enough. He was thinking that now that Li Chunhua had given birth, it was time to ask Li Junsheng for those two hundred seventy-five yuan. At a moment like this, he certainly didn’t want his own mother to provoke Li Junsheng into anger.
With this in mind, Sun Gui hurriedly tugged at Wu Dongmei’s sleeve, signaling her to speak less.
He then tried to persuade her, “Mom, why don’t you go back and take care of Daya and Erya for Chunhua? I’ll stay here and watch over her myself! We can’t keep relying on my brother-in-law to look after the kids. You should go to my father-in-law’s place and bring the two girls home first!”
Mentioning the other two girls at home, Wu Dongmei’s face showed nothing but disdain.
“What a burden, having to take care of the little ones all day and then the older ones too!”
Though Wu Dongmei kept grumbling, Sun Gui kept nudging her to quiet down. He rubbed his thumb and forefinger together in her direction as a hint, and only then did Wu Dongmei recall the two hundred seventy-five yuan from Li Junsheng.
This new granddaughter, another “money-losing” girl as she saw it, had angered her so much she’d nearly forgotten about the money.
“I’ll go home first, then. You stay here,” Wu Dongmei said, finally turning to leave. Once she was out of sight, Sun Gui quickly put on a fawning smile for Li Junsheng.
“Dad, my mom just has a sharp tongue, but she means well. Don’t take what she said to heart! Of course we’ll take care of Chunhua. She was just saying she’d go home to make chicken soup for her.”
Sun Gui played the dutiful son-in-law, but Li Junsheng simply watched him coldly, unmoved.
Seeing he was getting nowhere, Sun Gui hurried to offer Li Junsheng a cigarette, matchbox in hand, ready to light it for him.
“Dad, have a cigarette!”
Li Junsheng shot him a fierce glare and replied sternly, holding his newborn granddaughter, “The baby was just born and you want me to smoke in front of her? What kind of father are you? And you don’t even look where you are!”
Realizing his blunder, Sun Gui quickly threw the cigarette away and pocketed the matches. “Sorry, Dad, I’m just a bit overexcited.”
Li Junsheng snorted and went to sit in a corner, waiting for his daughter to be brought out of the operating room.
Sun Gui, growing impatient, came straight to the point: “Dad, now that Chunhua has given birth, when will you give her the money you promised?”
Li Junsheng had expected as much—Sun Gui’s eagerness had always been about the money. He finally fixed his gaze on Sun Gui, his eyes glinting with icy sharpness.
“That two hundred and seventy-five yuan for Chunhua is all you can think about?”
Seeing Li Junsheng’s displeasure and his direct question, Sun Gui quickly tried to explain, “No, Dad, it’s not that I’m after the money. It’s just that Chunhua’s hemorrhaging and needs treatment, which costs a lot. I have no money left to pay the hospital fees!”
Sun Gui’s words were full of contradictions and lacked logic.
Li Junsheng mocked him, “Didn’t you say a few days ago that you weren’t short on money, and that you ate like it was New Year’s every day?”
Sun Gui faltered, and immediately shifted the blame onto Li Chunhua. “It’s true, we’re not short of money, but Chunhua’s emergency cost a lot!”
Li Junsheng didn’t believe a word. Coming back from a previous life, he knew exactly what kind of man Sun Gui was.
In the past, even after his daughter’s death, Sun Gui never suffered any consequences. He gambled, accumulated massive debts, and when he couldn’t pay, the creditors came after Li Junsheng instead. That was when he realized Sun Gui indulged in every vice imaginable.
There was no way he’d hand the money over to Sun Gui—it would never return.
After a moment’s thought, Li Junsheng deliberately said, “If that’s the case, write me an IOU, and I’ll lend you the money.”
At this, Sun Gui was utterly stunned.
Why wouldn’t Li Junsheng simply give him the money? Why ask for an IOU? There was a vast difference between a gift and a loan.
There was no way Sun Gui would ever write an IOU.
“Come on, Dad, Chunhua is your own daughter. You want to make her sign an IOU just to pay her hospital fees? Aren’t you worried she’ll resent you when she finds out?”
Li Junsheng glanced at him—Sun Gui was nothing if not persistent. After everything had been made clear, he still wanted that two hundred seventy-five yuan.
“Fine, I’ll just pay for Chunhua’s hospital fees directly. Why does the money have to go through you?”
Sun Gui was stunned again, his eyes darting as he racked his brain for another excuse to get his hands on the cash.
“I know people at the hospital. If I pay the fees, I can get a discount.”
By this point, Sun Gui was just spouting nonsense. Since when could you bargain over hospital fees? Did he really take Li Junsheng for a fool?
Watching Sun Gui’s desperate scheming, Li Junsheng simply ignored him. He’d made himself clear—there was no way the money would pass through Sun Gui’s hands. If the man had any sense, he’d give up on the idea.
Just then, the doors to the operating room opened and the medical staff wheeled Li Chunhua out. Li Junsheng immediately followed, carrying the baby, and trailed the medical team to the ward.
Sun Gui cursed Li Junsheng inwardly but didn’t hurry back to the ward.
Lying in bed, Li Chunhua looked pale and weak, but seeing the baby in Li Junsheng’s arms, she reached out.
“Dad, let me see the baby.”
Li Junsheng placed his granddaughter beside her. At the sight of her child, Li Chunhua burst into tears.
Li Junsheng quickly comforted her, “Don’t cry, don’t cry, or you’ll leave yourself with lasting illness. If anything’s wrong, tell me. I’m here. What happened that you gave birth early and started hemorrhaging?”
“Dad, before this baby was even born, Sun Gui couldn’t wait to bring another woman home. I caught the two of them in bed together!”
Provoked by the woman Sun Gui brought home, Li Chunhua had argued with him. In the heat of the moment, he pushed her, causing her to hemorrhage.
“What? That beast Sun Gui actually did such a thing?”
At that moment, Li Guohua, the second son, rushed in, just in time to hear the cause of his sister’s bleeding. He was so enraged he wanted to tear Sun Gui apart.
Seeing his son about to storm out and confront Sun Gui, Li Junsheng grabbed his shoulder.
Without a word, Li Junsheng handed the baby to Li Guohua. “Watch the child for me, she’s your little niece.”
Li Guohua, puzzled but obedient, took the baby.
“Dad, I’m going to deal with Sun Gui now!”
Li Junsheng shook his head, signaling him to stay and look after the child.
Then he walked to the door, and with a smile, called out to Sun Gui, who was lurking outside the ward, still plotting for his money.
“Sun Gui, come here for a moment. There’s something I’d like to discuss with you.”
