After Peach finished speaking, she threw down her chopsticks, picked up her tray, and stalked away in a huff.

“Hey, that little girl has quite a temper,” Liu Xun muttered. Then he noticed that Peach’s bowl of soup was still on the table.

He brought it over and took a sip. “I told you not to waste food. How could anyone leave such delicious soup untouched?”

After leaving the cafeteria, Lu Chengfeng strode toward the parking lot.

He found his car, got in, started the engine, and drove away.

Meanwhile, at the Forensic Center, Shu Yan returned to her office, closed the door, and lay down on the sofa.

She unconsciously rubbed her belly and murmured, “Baby, you ate your father’s wontons so enthusiastically this morning. Why don’t you like the food at your mother’s workplace? You’re such a picky eater. How are you supposed to grow up?”

When she finished, she paused, suddenly finding herself rather amusing.

It had only been a month. The baby was still no more than a mass of blood. How could it possibly hear her?

Even if it were further along and could hear her, it would not understand her.

Still, this child was already causing her so much trouble. If she kept it, what would happen to her work in the future?

She could not very well crouch to the side and vomit every time she went out to a crime scene.

What a headache.

Shu Yan lay on the sofa with her eyes closed, resting.

About half an hour later, someone knocked twice on the office door.

Then Lu Chengfeng’s voice came from outside. “Yanyan, are you there? I’m coming in.”

Shu Yan quickly opened her eyes and sat up.

Lu Chengfeng pushed the door open, entered, then closed and locked it behind him.

Shu Yan frowned at him. “What are you doing? This is the workplace. Don’t try anything.”

Lu Chengfeng raised the meal box in his hand. “I bought you lunch. See if it suits your appetite.”

Shu Yan said, “I’ve already eaten.”

Lu Chengfeng sat down beside her, took out the meal box, and opened it. “You only ate two bites in the cafeteria just now. That wasn’t enough to fill the gaps between your teeth.”

Shu Yan fell silent and looked at the food in his hands.

Lu Chengfeng continued, “I bought a serving of pineapple beef and a serving of stir-fried cabbage with vinegar. I made the cabbage myself. The head chef said he’s from the south and doesn’t know how to cook northern dishes. Luckily, the restaurant had cabbage.”

Shu Yan stared at him in astonishment. “You went into someone else’s restaurant kitchen to cook for me?”

“The owner and the chef had no objection,” Lu Chengfeng replied. “They said I could come over whenever I wanted to cook. From now on, I can make something there, pack it up, and bring it home for you.”

For a moment, Shu Yan did not know what to say.

Lu Chengfeng handed her the chopsticks.

“Try it. You don’t have to eat much rice, but eat more of the dishes. I also bought two pounds of tangerines. The owner said they’re sweet and sour.”

As he spoke, Lu Chengfeng reached out, took out a tangerine, and began peeling it.

Shu Yan picked up a piece of pineapple and put it in her mouth. It suited her taste perfectly, so she took another slice of beef and ate that as well.

The sweet-and-sour flavor of the pineapple made the beef barely tolerable.

Then she picked up a mouthful of cabbage. The moment she put it in her mouth, her eyes lit up.

His cooking was still the most pleasing to her palate.

Seeing how much Shu Yan liked the vinegar-fried cabbage, Lu Chengfeng’s lips curved upward.

“If we can get off work on time tonight, let’s go buy some fresh ingredients. I’ll cook for you.”

“Oh.” Shu Yan replied while eating. “This cabbage is really good.”

“Cabbage pickled into sour greens is good too. I just don’t know whether you can buy it around here.”

“Let’s look at the farmers’ market,” Shu Yan suggested. “They should have everything there.”

Lu Chengfeng took out his phone and checked. There was a farmers’ market nearby, about a ten-minute drive away.

He decided they would stop there after work.

As soon as it was time to leave, Lu Chengfeng sent Shu Yan a message.

“I’m going downstairs to get the car. Meet me at the place where I dropped you off this morning.”

Shu Yan thought for a moment, then typed three words and sent them.

“Got it.”

After putting her things away, she went downstairs and walked along the road to find Lu Chengfeng.

When she saw his car parked by the roadside, Shu Yan cautiously glanced around. Only after confirming that none of her colleagues were nearby did she approach.

She quickly opened the passenger-side door and climbed in. As she fastened her seat belt, she urged him, “Drive.”

Lu Chengfeng was both amused and exasperated. “Even if your colleagues saw us, it wouldn’t matter. Isn’t accepting a ride perfectly normal?”

“Not for me,” Shu Yan retorted. “I’ve never accepted rides from colleagues before, let alone male colleagues. Do you know what this is called? It’s called having a sense of propriety. Or did you often give female colleagues rides before?”

Lu Chengfeng paused. “No. The women at my former workplace wouldn’t dare make such a request.”

Wouldn’t dare?

Shu Yan found his choice of words strange.

It was not as though he were some savage beast.

“Do you know how to get to the farmers’ market?” she asked.

Lu Chengfeng nodded. “I checked during lunch. I know the general route. If we can’t find it later, I’ll use the navigation.”

“You’ve only been here a month, and you already know the roads around here so well?”

Lu Chengfeng smiled. “I have an excellent memory. Of course, it still can’t compare with yours. Liu Xun said your memory is the best.”

“He exaggerated. It’s not that I have a good memory. I just pay attention.”

“That’s right. The important thing is putting your heart into it.”

Ten minutes later, Lu Chengfeng found the farmers’ market.

However, they drove around for quite a while before finding a parking space nearby.

It was rush hour, and countless electric scooters darted wildly through the traffic.

Worried that one of them might hit Shu Yan, Lu Chengfeng drew her into his arms and shielded her as they walked along the row of shops.

Shu Yan had never been to this market and had not expected it to be so chaotic. She was a little uneasy as well.

She obediently let Lu Chengfeng protect her all the way to the market entrance.

The inside was just as disorderly, noisy and bustling.

Lu Chengfeng took her hand and reminded her, “Be careful. Stay close to me. If there’s anything you want, just tell me.”

“Mm,” Shu Yan murmured softly.

She rarely cooked and had no idea what to buy.

Lu Chengfeng knew that perfectly well. He had already made a mental shopping list, stopping whenever he saw something they needed.

The two of them were both strikingly attractive, and Shu Yan was wearing her police uniform, so vendors and passersby kept glancing their way.

As the number of groceries grew, Lu Chengfeng had to let go of Shu Yan’s hand to carry the bags.

Shu Yan wanted to help shoulder some of the load, but Lu Chengfeng refused and insisted on carrying everything himself.

After buying the vegetables, they stopped at a fruit stand to pick up some fruit before heading home.

By the time they returned, it was already half past six. Lu Chengfeng told Shu Yan to rest while he cooked.

When she offered to help him prepare the ingredients, he refused.

She had no choice but to pull out a chair and sit at the dining table, keeping him company with conversation.

Lu Chengfeng moved with practiced efficiency. Forty minutes later, the dishes were served.

There was pork ribs with pickled greens, chilled shredded lettuce stem, steamed egg custard, and shredded pork in garlic sauce.

With the pork ribs and pickled greens, Shu Yan finished a bowl of rice and drank quite a bit of soup.

She also sampled the other dishes. In any case, Lu Chengfeng would finish whatever was left, so she did not have to worry about wasting food.

Seeing how heartily Shu Yan ate, Lu Chengfeng was delighted.

After dinner, Lu Chengfeng cleared away the dishes again. Then the two of them went downstairs to take out the trash and took a walk to help their food settle.

When the neighborhood aunties saw them, they no longer looked at them with the same curiosity as before. Instead, they greeted them warmly.

Everyone had already taken the two of them for a married couple.

Shu Yan no longer felt embarrassed either, and simply let Lu Chengfeng hold her hand.

After throwing out the trash, they were walking toward the small plaza when they ran into several familiar mothers.

One of them looked at Shu Yan’s stomach and suddenly asked, “Director Shu, are you expecting a baby?”
