Shen Jin’an made a shushing gesture at Gu Yichao and continued arrogantly into the phone, “So be sensible. As long as you return the money, I might consider not causing you any trouble.”

If it weren’t for that extortionate call from the original owner’s parents, she wouldn’t have known that he had borrowed fifty million from them one after another.

That was a full fifty million!

“Shen Jin’an! What do you mean by this? We raised you with so much hardship, and this is how you repay us?”

“Hardship?” Shen Jin’an snorted, countless fragmented memories not belonging to her flashing through her mind.

“Are you referring to the time you locked me in the storage room for three days and ignored me just because my younger brother fell from a tree? Or the time you sent me out in the pouring rain to buy a toy I accidentally broke for my brother? Or perhaps the day of my eighteenth birthday, when you nearly got me drunk and handed me over to that old lecher to pave the way for your precious son?”

That girl, raised in a household steeped in extreme sexism favoring boys, was ruthlessly bullied and mentally oppressed. She willingly became their ATM, like a tail-wagging dog begging for scraps of false affection from her parents.

The original owner’s transformation into the cruel stepmother who later abused Lili was largely due to the poisonous example set by these vampire-like parents.

“All of that was for your own good, to toughen you up, to find you a good match! Can’t you understand that? You really disappoint me!”

The voices on the other end of the phone showed no guilt whatsoever; their ugliness was palpable even through the line.

“Sorry, I’m cold-hearted and ruthless, unbound by family ties. If you want understanding, you should ask your precious son. Oh wait—” Shen Jin’an dragged out the words with thick sarcasm, “since you didn’t get the bride price, he only knows how to throw tantrums.”

As soon as she finished, the line went dead with a busy signal.

She put down the phone and finally turned her gaze to Gu Yichao, who had been scrutinizing her from the start.

Shen Jin’an knew exactly what he was thinking—since their very first meeting, he had never let down his guard.

She was too lazy to explain and simply played the recording of her earlier call.

“Well, husband, can you trust me now?”

Gu Yichao didn’t answer directly. “You’re smart and should know what’s best for you.”

Shen Jin’an met his gaze head-on, unafraid of his imposing presence. “Don’t worry, husband. I love you so much, and now that we’re married, we’re family. I would never hurt my own family.”

“Don’t worry, hubby!”

Out of nowhere, Gu Lili popped her little head in, imitating Shen Jin’an’s earlier words perfectly, instantly breaking the tense atmosphere.

“What does ‘hubby’ mean?”

Seeing the little one tilt her head in curiosity, Shen Jin’an couldn’t help but tease a little, “It means ‘grandpa husband.’”

Upon hearing this, Gu Lili’s eyes widened in shock. She hadn’t expected her dad, so handsome and young-looking, to already be a grandpa husband!

Though only two years old, she understood the importance of respecting elders.

Feeling an unprecedented sense of responsibility, the little toddler clenched her fists and decided then and there to take good care of her disabled old father.

She walked behind the wheelchair, reaching out her tiny hands and pushing with all her might, but the wheelchair didn’t move an inch.

“Heave-ho—”

Refusing to believe it, Gu Lili pushed harder with her short legs. After who knows how long, the wheelchair finally began to move!

Excited, she bounced up and down, then suddenly remembered she was a big kid now and immediately put on a serious expression.

Gu Yichao, who had quietly activated the wheelchair’s movement, hid his amusement and pride.

At dinner, Shen Jin’an carried the little one into the dining room to find a sumptuous feast laid out before her own seat. Meanwhile, Gu Lili’s high chair held only a small bowl of plain congee, a few pieces of blanched broccoli, and mushy chicken breast puree.

Gu Lili glanced longingly at her stepmother’s food, swallowed hard, but said nothing. She obediently climbed into her chair and put on her bib.

Shen Jin’an pulled the nutritionist and chef aside. “Why is Lili’s meal so plain?”

“Wasn’t that what you instructed earlier? Young Master is too chubby, and that’s bad for his health. He needs a light diet to lose some weight.”

Shen Jin’an glanced at Gu Lili’s round little figure. Though chubby, she was hardly overweight for her age.

It was obvious the original owner was deliberately singling her out.

“My mistake before. From now on, all Lili’s meals will follow your prescribed menu. Make more of what she likes, and include snacks as well.”

Returning to the table, Shen Jin’an took the small bundle in her arms. “I was wrong before. Lili isn’t fat at all. Tonight, you’ll eat with me.”

Night deepened. Dinner had long ended, but Gu Yichao’s figure was nowhere to be seen.

A worried housekeeper approached Shen Jin’an, who was playing blocks with Gu Lili, and whispered, “Madam, please try to persuade Master. Since he came back, he hasn’t eaten a bite. His body just out of ICU can’t handle this neglect.”

“Me?”

Shen Jin’an pointed to herself incredulously, her eyes filled with innocent disbelief.

What gave them the impression she could reason with Gu Yichao?

The housekeeper sighed helplessly, “Only Steward Wang could get through to him before, but he’s been away these past few days. We’re worried but dare not intervene.”

After a few days, Shen Jin’an still hadn’t figured out Gu Yichao’s temperament, but if even the housekeeper dared not call him to eat, he must be difficult.

Still, he was Lili’s father, and as Gu Yichao’s legal wife—the one who approved his lavish daily allowance of one hundred thousand—she had to at least keep up appearances.

“Alright, I’ll go see.”

Shen Jin’an knocked on Gu Yichao’s door. Her voice was loud enough but met with no response.

“Husband? Gu Yichao?”

After several knocks and still no reply, a bad thought crossed her mind.

After all, he had just been discharged from intensive care today.

Without hesitation, Shen Jin’an turned the handle and pushed open the door.

Though she hadn’t imagined Gu Yichao half-dead on the floor, he wasn’t in good shape either.

He sat slumped on the ground, his black shirt slightly disheveled, revealing a smooth chest. Nearby, his electric wheelchair lay overturned, its wheels still spinning slightly.

His eyes were obscured by strands of black hair, his expression unreadable, but the bulging veins on his hands betrayed his anger and humiliation.

So disheveled and pitiful, he was a far cry from the commanding master of the Gu family who sat in that wheelchair with unshakable control during the day.

Hearing the door open, Gu Yichao suddenly lifted his head. His eyes flashed with terrifying ferocity.

“Get out!”
