Chapter 56 I Let You Go
As the door swung open, the first thing visible was Lu Huaijin’s sullen face. In an instant, the atmosphere inside the room became oppressively suffocating.
Chun Tao, seeing this, trembled all over and quickly stepped aside. Inwardly, she cursed her luck, terrified that Su Yao’s outrageous words just now had been overheard by her master. A cold sweat broke out across her forehead.
“Get out,” Lu Huaijin commanded.
Chun Tao glanced anxiously at Su Yao but dared not defy Lu Huaijin’s order. She hurriedly exited the room, fearing that lingering even a moment longer would unleash the storm of his fury upon her.
Near the door, Chang Ting wore a grave expression, his face dark and ominous.
“Did Master hear everything?” Chun Tao asked with a hint of hope.
“Every word,” Chang Ting replied clearly.
Chun Tao felt the world spin; her legs weakened, nearly unable to stand. Could the young lady be in trouble? Horrible images flooded her mind.
“Brother Chang Ting, what should we do? Will my lady be harmed?” she anxiously clutched his arm.
Frowning, Chang Ting was puzzled himself, unable to understand why Miss Su was so obstinate. Master doted on her endlessly, providing everything she wanted, yet she repeatedly stabbed him in the heart.
“Brother Chang Ting, please think of a way. My lady is pregnant and cannot endure harsh torture.”
Chun Tao’s eyes welled with tears, her voice trembling with despair.
“Mind your own affairs. Our master’s matters are not for servants to meddle in,” Chang Ting said coldly, brushing off her hand.
Inside, Su Yao looked at Lu Huaijin nervously, her heart pounding in her throat.
Lu Huaijin remained silent, his gaze piercing and relentless.
Her hands instinctively clutched her clothes, fingertips whitening from the grip.
His stare was as if he were stripping her bare, tearing her apart with each look.
It sent chills through her body, and panic gripped her heart.
“Did you… hear everything?” Su Yao’s earlier defiance vanished, but then she thought, if he heard it all, so be it. At this point, she even wished he would just banish her—then she wouldn’t have to live in fear in this household. That, at least, would be a relief.
With that thought, her fear lessened somewhat.
Summoning courage, she lifted her head to meet Lu Huaijin’s gaze.
In that moment, it was like staring into a bottomless abyss.
Lu Huaijin tilted her chin up. “Look at that beautiful face, and yet such a ruthless heart. Su Yao, you are heartless and cruel.”
“Yes, I am heartless and unfeeling. I’m with you only because you forced me. You see, your mother dislikes me, and soon you will have many concubines. Lu Huaijin, please let me go.”
Lu Huaijin looked at her coldly. “Go? Where do you think you can go? Once you step out of the Lu estate, do you know how many wolves and beasts are watching you? What kind of fate do you think awaits you?”
Su Yao’s eyes reddened, tears swirling but not falling.
“I have hands and feet; I won’t starve to death.”
Lu Huaijin laughed bitterly. “You’re carrying my child now. Where do you plan to go?”
Su Yao froze, her hand instinctively resting on her belly.
“That child without name or status shouldn’t even be here. I always took contraceptive medicine—someone switched my medicine secretly. It was you!”
She suddenly became agitated, trying to slap her belly, but Lu Huaijin grabbed her wrist.
His face darkened with genuine anger.
“Do you know what you’re doing?”
Tears streamed down Su Yao’s cheeks uncontrollably, dripping onto the floor.
Lu Huaijin squeezed her wrist painfully; her bones felt as if they might shatter. She struggled desperately, but it was useless—his grip was like iron.
“Let go! It hurts…” she moaned in agony.
Only then did he loosen his hold.
Looking at her, frustration welled up inside him.
He had done everything—nourished her with the best food, clothed her in the finest garments, and now they had a child together. Yet this woman only thought of leaving him, even rejecting their child.
“What is it that you truly want?” he asked in a low voice, baffled.
He had remained pure, giving her all his love and devotion alone for these years.
What more could she want?
He could not understand why she couldn’t be like other women, to see him as her sole support, to respect and love him.
Instead, she was like this.
Su Yao wept even harder, all her grievances, anger, and helplessness bursting forth.
Lu Huaijin frowned; he had done nothing to her yet she cried like this.
And with such grievance?
He was irritated, yet had no outlet for his anger.
“Su Yao, if you truly want to leave me, it’s not impossible,” Lu Huaijin said coldly.
Su Yao stopped sobbing, her shoulders trembling as she looked at him.
“Really?”
Lu Huaijin stood silently, gazing at her with eyes deep and unfathomable.
His eyes roamed over her—from her jet-black hair to her delicate features, down to her slender waist.
How could anyone be so favored?
Such beauty and figure.
Truly a rare sight in this world.
He examined her face carefully, finally resting on her soft, pink lips.
When she spoke, her words pierced his heart, igniting his fury.
Such a temperament in a woman was no blessing.
If only she would stay silent.
But then, she wouldn’t be his Su Yao.
Lu Huaijin was silent for a long time. The prolonged stillness made Su Yao increasingly uneasy. Her hands fidgeted with a handkerchief but dared not ask more.
At last, Lu Huaijin slowly turned, walked to a nearby stool, pulled it out, and sat down, pouring himself a cup of tea.
Su Yao stood there dazed, her feet seemingly nailed to the floor.
“Come here,” Lu Huaijin’s voice came softly, emotionless, yet it made Su Yao’s heart tighten suddenly.
She wondered if she had misheard.
How could he be so kind? With his usual domineering and forceful nature, how could he so easily agree to let her go? He was always decisive, controlling everything!
She hesitated, yet did not move a step forward. The man’s voice came again.
“After you give birth to the child, I will let you go.”
