Chapter 53: You Truly Disappoint Me

At that moment, I felt as though the sky had come crashing down around me!
I had thought that seeing mist on the oxygen mask meant she had survived the crisis.
But the doctor’s words made my heart clench all over again.
Liu Qing was taken into the ICU, while Jiang Zi and Jiang Yue were stopped outside.
“Sis, look! Just look!”
“This is what the man you’ve loved for so long has done!”
Jiang Zi spoke with undisguised contempt.
“Wasn’t she the one who tried to kill herself?”
Jiang Yue’s words made me want to kill her.
How could she possibly say something like that?
Even now, it seemed she was still protecting the man she loved.
Jiang Zi was utterly speechless as well. She shook her head and said, “Jiang Yue, what am I supposed to say to you? You really are… beyond saving.”
Jiang Zi had said exactly what I wanted to say.
No—if I had been standing in front of her, I would have slapped her twice and knocked some sense into her.
Jiang Zi continued, “Even if Liu Qing did try to kill herself, do you really think Cheng Jun had nothing to do with it?”
“Why was Liu Qing with him at the hotel? And why would she suddenly try to kill herself for no reason? Doesn’t that explain everything?”
Jiang Yue fell silent again.
It seemed that whenever something was too painful for her to acknowledge, she chose to respond with silence.
That woman truly was beyond saving.
She was the one who deserved to die a thousand deaths!
Suddenly, Jiang Yue stood up and prepared to leave.
Jiang Zi called after her. “You’re leaving just like that?”
“What else am I supposed to do? What’s the point of staying here?”
She glanced coldly at her watch. “It’s almost night. There’s no use waiting here! I’ve already had someone contact her family. They’ll be here soon.”
“Sis, you’ve really disappointed me! Go on, leave by yourself!”
After saying that, Jiang Zi did not spare Jiang Yue another glance.
Even her own younger sister had lost faith in her. That alone was enough to show how hateful Jiang Yue truly was.
She left the hospital just like that. It was already dark outside.
Jiang Yue stood at the hospital entrance, staring at the endless stream of traffic.
After standing there in a daze for a while, she took out her phone and called Cheng Jun.
“Hello? Where are you?” Jiang Yue’s tone was no longer as sweet and gentle as before.

“All right. I’ll come find you now. We’ll talk in person.”
That shameless woman was actually going to see Cheng Jun.
Had a dog eaten her heart?
Forget it. I couldn’t control her, and no one else could either.
Jiang Yue had barely left when Liu Chengcai hurried to the hospital, limping badly.
Sweat covered his face as he rushed to the nurses’ station and asked about Liu Qing.
After checking the records, the nurse told him that Liu Qing was in the ICU. He immediately hurried toward the intensive care unit.
His right leg could barely bend, and he normally had great difficulty walking. Yet at that moment, driven by anxiety, he actually began to run.
His right leg was practically being dragged behind him.
When he reached the ICU entrance, Liu Chengcai tried to go inside, but a nurse stopped him and told him that no one was allowed to enter the ICU without permission.
With his voice trembling, Liu Chengcai said, “I… My daughter… My daughter is in there. Let me go in and see her, just for a moment. I need to see her.”
Looking at Liu Chengcai in such a wretched state, I truly did not know what to say.
In a way, he was innocent too. He had been deceived by that bastard Li Feng.
But he was also to blame. If he had not been so greedy, he would not have been fooled.
A pitiable person always has something hateful about him.
The nurse firmly refused again and told Liu Chengcai that he could only enter after receiving permission from the doctor.
Liu Chengcai stared into the ICU. In the end, he crouched down helplessly, clutching his head with both hands and repeating over and over:
“I’m sorry, my daughter. I’m sorry! I’m the one who hurt you… You have to be all right. Please, don’t let anything happen to you!”
“Your father will avenge you. I swear your father will avenge you!”
Liu Chengcai still loved Liu Qing. Whatever else could be said about him, he had once been a good father.
It was only after that upheaval that he gradually lost hope in life and allowed his own life to fall into ruin.
But that did not mean he was rotten to the core.
I could only hope that this experience would finally bring him to his senses.
As for whether Liu Qing would ever wake up, however, that remained unknown.
…
Elsewhere, Jiang Yue had already arrived at Cheng Jun’s residence.
Cheng Jun acted as though nothing had happened. Even with Jiang Yue sitting in front of him, he showed no intention of apologizing.
“Cheng Jun, I think you owe me an explanation for what happened today,” Jiang Yue said coldly.
It seemed to be the first time she had ever spoken to Cheng Jun in such a tone. Even so, it was far gentler than the way she had spoken to me before.
If I had been the one involved, she would never have come to see me, much less demanded any explanation from me.

The fact that she had come here to see Cheng Jun proved that she still cared about him and hoped he could explain everything clearly.
I truly did not know how to describe this woman. She was practically inhuman.
Cheng Jun let out a soft sigh and said calmly, “Yueyue, I know that no matter how I explain this to you now, you probably won’t believe me.”
“So you never intended to explain anything to me?”
“Of course I did. I just want you to calm down first.”
“I’m perfectly calm.”
I could see that Jiang Yue really was calm.
If this had happened to me, she would have already been screaming abuse at me. She would never have spoken to me so reasonably.
“All right, then. I’ll tell you what really happened.”
Cheng Jun paused, then put on an aggrieved expression and said, “Liu Qing called me this morning and said she knew the truth about Chu Jianghe’s car accident. But she didn’t want to come to you. Since she happened to know me…”
“Wait!” Jiang Yue frowned. “Earlier, when I asked whether you knew her, you told me that you didn’t.”
Only then did Cheng Jun realize that he had let something slip. He hurriedly explained, “Yueyue, I’m not close to her. I only recently found out that she worked for the media company I had invested in…”
“But I swear, I really don’t know her well.”
Jiang Yue seemed to believe him. She nodded and continued, “Go on.”
“I didn’t agree at first. After all, I barely knew her. But she told me she didn’t want to come to you, and I had no idea why.”
“Then I thought about how badly you wanted to know the truth about the accident. Besides, your father had said that day that he wanted an explanation for Chu Jianghe’s death.”
“So I went to meet her. She booked the hotel room herself. If you don’t believe me, you can check the hotel records.”
Jiang Yue’s face remained expressionless. “And then? Why did she slash her wrists in the bathroom?”
Cheng Jun spread his hands, looking utterly wronged. “Yueyue, I truly had no idea this would happen. Everything had been going well. Then she suddenly went to the bathroom.”
“When she didn’t come out for a long time and didn’t respond when I called to her, I kicked the door down and found that she had already slit her wrists.”
“I really knew nothing about it. I’m willing to cooperate with the police investigation. It truly had nothing to do with me.”
Listening to Cheng Jun’s brazen lies, I wanted nothing more than to strangle him.
That bastard had every lie perfectly prepared. The worst part was how earnestly he told them, making it impossible to spot any flaws.
Jiang Yue fell silent. I had no idea whether she truly believed him.
Amid her silence, Cheng Jun suddenly seized her hand.
“Yueyue, you have to believe me! Besides, the police are already investigating. They’ll prove my innocence.”
Jiang Yue froze for a moment, then coldly shook his hand away.
“Then we’ll wait until the police investigation is over before we talk about it.”
