Chapter 26: Things Are Not That Simple
When Jiang Yue arrived at the police station, Liu Qing had already spoken with Officer An, who was in charge of my case.
She was sitting in the station lobby, her expression complex, lacking the joy one might expect from seeing justice served. As Jiang Yue walked in, she glanced at her before heading straight to Officer An.
"You called to say the perpetrator was found. Has he confessed?"
Officer An nodded, his face stern. "He has, but according to our investigation, things are not that simple."
"What does that mean?" Jiang Yue frowned slightly.
Hearing this, Liu Qing stood up immediately. "You should ask your precious 'white moonlight' about that. This is all the fine handiwork of your beloved."
Jiang Yue snapped back instantly, "Listen here, Liu, direct your grievances at me. What does this have to do with Cheng Jun?"
Liu Qing gave a cold scoff. "Nothing at all. The police will get to the bottom of it, and you'll see soon enough whether it has anything to do with him."
Jiang Yue could not take it anymore. She turned to Officer An and said, "Officer, did you hear that? She is slandering him! Can I press charges for defamation?"
Officer An felt quite speechless. Ever since they came to identify the body, the two women had argued every time they met. As long as they did not resort to physical violence, there was little he could do. He sighed softly and said, "Look, she didn't explicitly name anyone, so you can't really blame her for that."
Jiang Yue’s face darkened in frustration. "What is that supposed to mean? Are you taking her side? How much did she pay you?"
Officer An looked at her expressionlessly, silent for a moment, before saying, "Please, calm down." He paused, then added sternly, "We received a tip-off that this case might involve Cheng Jun. We have already notified him, and he should be on his way."
Jiang Yue lost her composure, shouting, "What do you mean by this? On what grounds are you falsely accusing people?" She turned to glare at Liu Qing. "Was this your doing? How can you be so wicked? You just can't stand it when someone is better off than Chu Jianghe, can you?"
Liu Qing did not respond, not even sparing Jiang Yue a glance. Agitated, Jiang Yue grabbed Liu Qing and forced her to turn around, glaring at her viciously. "I'm talking to you! Show some respect!"
Liu Qing replied calmly, "Take your filthy hands off me. First, I have a name. Second, if you want respect, you must first learn how to show it."
The pampered Miss Jiang had never heard such words in her life. She was instantly enraged. "Who do you think you are? Why should I respect you?"
"Liu Qing, don't overestimate yourself. You and Chu Jianghe are both just trash! You love him so much? Then go die and join him!"
This finally broke Liu Qing’s composure. She stood up, locked eyes with Jiang Yue, and said, word by word, "Watch your mouth, unless you want to show everyone just how low-class you are. And another thing—don't use your vulgarity to challenge my bottom line. I am not like Chu Jianghe; I won't indulge you!"
Seeing that Jiang Yue was about to lash out, Officer An interjected, "Talk is fine, but no physical altercations! You’re in a police station—you know the consequences."
Jiang Yue froze, withdrew her hand, and sneered threateningly, "Fine, Liu Qing. This isn't over!"
"I'll be waiting," Liu Qing replied.
I watched the whole scene from the sidelines, unable to do anything. I wanted to call out to Liu Qing and tell her not to clash with Jiang Yue. It wasn't to protect Jiang Yue, but because offending her would make Liu Qing’s life incredibly difficult. I knew Liu Qing wasn't afraid, but at the end of the day, she was just an ordinary person. Now that she had lost her job, I couldn't even imagine what lengths Jiang Yue would go to in order to target her next.
After another wait, Cheng Jun finally arrived. Jiang Yue immediately walked up to him. "Brother Jun, don't worry, it's all just a misunderstanding."
Cheng Jun looked quite calm. He smiled faintly at Jiang Yue. "It's fine. I have a clear conscience; I have nothing to fear."
Officer An approached him. "Mr. Cheng, sorry to bother you. We need to take some of your time to clear up a few questions."
Cheng Jun nodded generously. "No problem. Ask whatever you wish; I guarantee I will answer everything I know."
A young officer nearby asked Officer An, "Captain, should we head to the interrogation room?"
Cheng Jun frowned, and Jiang Yue immediately bristled. "What's this? Are you interrogating a criminal?"
Officer An smiled. "Don't worry, Miss Jiang. We don't need the interrogation room. We can talk right here."
Officer An gestured to a chair nearby. "Mr. Cheng, please, have a seat."
Once Cheng Jun sat down, he glanced at Liu Qing and suddenly frowned. Liu Qing stared back at him, a cold smirk curling her lips. Cheng Jun’s previously calm expression seemed to tense up.
Officer An, having worked in law enforcement for years, was meticulous about facial details. Noticing the change in Cheng Jun's demeanor, he didn't voice his suspicions immediately. Instead, he said, "Mr. Cheng, have some water. We just need to clarify a few things; there's no need to be nervous."
Cheng Jun snapped out of it and offered a stiff smile. "I'm not nervous. Why would I be?"
"Good. Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Cheng." Officer An sat down and asked, "Where were you on July 28th, and what were you doing?"
After a brief moment of thought, Cheng Jun replied, "I was with Jiang Yue the entire day."
"That's right, I can verify that," Jiang Yue chimed in immediately.
"Do you know the specific times?"
Cheng Jun and Jiang Yue exchanged a look. Jiang Yue spoke up, "I went to the airport to pick him up at eight in the morning, and we stayed together until I returned home at ten-thirty at night. I was with him the entire time."
Officer An glanced at Jiang Yue, his expression blank. "Miss Jiang, I know you are anxious, but I was not asking you."
Cheng Jun then said, "Yes, that's correct. The flight arrived at eight in the morning, Jiang Yue picked me up, and we were together ever since."
"Is that so?" Officer An’s expression turned serious, his gaze sharp enough to pierce through the facade.
Jiang Yue grew impatient again. "What exactly do you want? We've told you everything you asked for. If you don't believe us, go check for yourself!"
Officer An smiled faintly. "Miss Jiang, don't be so anxious. We have naturally already checked. And therefore..."
Officer An paused, then looked straight at Cheng Jun. "Mr. Cheng, you are lying."
