Chapter 15: No Peace Even in Death
“What did you say?” Jiang Jianbo furrowed his brow, as if he had misheard, looking at Dai Rong with a puzzled expression.
Jiang Yue quickly added, “Dad, Chu Jianghe is already dead. It was a car accident, just a couple of days ago.”
“Why haven’t I heard you mention this before?” Jiang Jianbo frowned.
Dai Rong responded, “What’s there to talk about? He’s dead, so what? What can we do about it?”
Jiang Yue remained silent.
Jiang Jianbo kept frowning, then suddenly let out a soft sigh.
“No matter what, he was with our Yueyue for so many years. Although I didn’t interact with him much, I know that kid treated Yueyue well.”
For Jiang Jianbo to say this showed he still had a dignified demeanor, at least not petty and scheming like Dai Rong, who was full of malice.
Dai Rong promptly retorted, “So what if he was good? Besides, wasn’t he supposed to be good to Yueyue?”
After a pause, she snorted, “That poor boy being able to marry into our family as a son-in-law is already his good fortune. He should treat Yueyue well.”
I really wanted to tear her mouth apart!
How could she have the nerve to say that?
She herself had been unscrupulous in marrying into a wealthy family—when she first met Jiang Jianbo, she couldn’t wait to sleep with him and deliberately didn’t use contraception.
As luck would have it, she got pregnant with Jiang Yue, and Jiang Jianbo had no choice but to marry her.
Dai Rong was truly no good. Once, I accidentally saw her enter a club with several other wealthy wives like herself.
That club was known for providing male model services, but I never mentioned this before.
Then Jiang Jianbo said, “Enough about him. Since he’s dead, that’s his fate. Yueyue, don’t blame yourself; it’s not your fault.”
Jiang Yue snorted coldly, “I’m not blaming myself. He got into that accident and died; who else could be at fault?”
Jiang Jianbo didn’t continue. Instead, he asked Jiang Yue, “By the way, Yueyue, do you still have the prescription for the traditional medicine you bought for me last time? I’ve been feeling some pain again recently.”
Jiang Yue hesitated, “Dad, I thought you were better. I don’t know where the prescription went; it’s probably lost.”
“Who prescribed it? I’ll go find him in person.”
Jiang Yue looked troubled, “Um… Dad, that prescription was from Chu Jianghe. He said his grandmother at the orphanage knew an old Chinese medicine doctor who gave it.”
“Chu Jianghe?” Jiang Jianbo was taken aback.
Jiang Yue nodded, “Yes. And his grandmother has already passed away, so it’s probably impossible to find him now.”
Jiang Jianbo said nothing more but sighed heavily.
Dai Rong chimed in, “So what? It’s just a Chinese medicine doctor. I’ll have someone inquire tomorrow and get a famous doctor to take a look.”
I laughed inwardly at her words.
She really thought just any famous doctor would do?
The old Chinese medicine doctor my grandmother knew wasn’t famous and had no official license, but the countless honorary plaques on his walls were not mere decoration.
Jiang Jianbo didn’t say more and nodded, letting the matter drop.
That night, after Jiang Yue went to sleep, my spirit once again appeared before Cheng Jun.
I still don’t know why it’s like this, as if everything revolves around him and Jiang Yue.
It feels like an unresolved matter in my heart, but what can I do?
I’m already dead. Watching them only tortures me.
On Cheng Jun’s bed was another woman—still Wu Shanshan.
Cheng Jun held her, and she leaned on his chest like a little kitten—obedient and gentle.
Wu Shanshan said, “Jun, when will you finally marry Jiang Yue?”
“Soon. Her parents invited me to their home today. It shouldn’t be long.”
Wu Shanshan curled her lips, “I’m both excited and worried—worried you might actually get close to her.”
Cheng Jun sneered, “What are you thinking, you little brat? How could I get close to her? She’s just a spoiled brat. If it weren’t for her family’s business, I wouldn’t bother with her.”
Wu Shanshan smiled happily and kissed his cheek, “Jun, who’s prettier, me or Jiang Yue?”
“Is there even a question? Of course it’s you.”
Wu Shanshan grew more excited, rolling atop Cheng Jun and becoming more assertive.
I wanted to run away but couldn’t—I had to close my eyes and not watch them.
Yet their voices continued ringing in my ears, letting me find no peace even in death.
Afterward, the two showered together and returned to the bed, holding each other tightly.
Wu Shanshan then asked, “By the way, Jun, is Chu Jianghe’s death really related to you?”
After a pause, she added, “I’m worried about you! What if they find out?”
Cheng Jun showed no concern and said proudly, “Don’t worry, they can’t find anything. I already sent the driver abroad—no witness, no evidence. How could they investigate?”
“Was there no surveillance on the road where the accident happened?”
“No, it’s a remote area. Don’t worry. In a few days, with no new leads, the case will be closed.”
Wu Shanshan looked puzzled, “Why did you want him dead? Jiang Yue didn’t even love him.”
Cheng Jun answered, “I know Jiang Yue didn’t love him, but he stubbornly stuck around. Jiang Yue asked for a divorce several times, but he refused.
I was in a hurry, so I had to use this drastic measure to make him get away from Jiang Yue quickly.”
Wu Shanshan giggled softly, “Jun, you’re so bad, but I love it.”
Cheng Jun suddenly became serious, “I need you to do something for me.”
Wu Shanshan nodded, “Okay, what do you need?”
“Tomorrow, go find Jiang Yue and convince her to withdraw the case at the police station, to admit the accident was just that—an accident.”
Wu Shanshan frowned, “Will she listen to me?”
“Figure out a way. She’s your best friend.”
“Alright, I’ll go see her tomorrow.”
So despicable—no wonder they’re a pair of scoundrels, not one good thing among them.
But what can I do?
Even knowing the truth, I cannot let it see the light of day.
My death will always be just an accident.
...
The next morning, my spirit finally stopped following Jiang Yue and Cheng Jun.
Perhaps it was because today was my burial day. I came to my own grave.
There was no one at the funeral but Liu Qing.
She wore a black outfit that made her already pale skin look even paler, as if devoid of blood.
Light rain drifted down from the sky. She held a black umbrella, standing alone before the tombstone.
Liu Qing was usually a cheerful girl, but her face now looked like that of a typhoid patient—full of sorrow.
Her voice was hoarse: “Brother Jianghe, may you rest in peace.”
“I hope in your next life, you’ll be born into a good family.”
“You never had parents growing up, living like wild grass. You finally met someone you liked, but that person hurt you the most.”
“I feel so sorry for you! You were so outstanding, you deserved a good life, but look where you ended up.”
“Don’t worry. I will find out the truth about your death. I believe the police are wrong—your death was definitely not an accident.”
Hearing Liu Qing’s words, my heart was torn apart.
I lived like wild grass, and in my life, I will never meet another Liu Qing.
We’ve known each other since childhood—practically childhood sweethearts.
But I never had feelings for her, never thought that way, and after marrying Jiang Yue, I rarely contacted her.
But I forgot—she was the one who truly suited me best.
Yet some fates, once missed, never come again.
Just like life—once it’s gone, it’s gone.
And then, there is no then...
