Chapter 155 Dislike
Liang Jinshang went to the restroom to wash her hands.
Shang Ao'er happened to be looking for her and caught sight of Liang Jinshang's retreating figure.
Slender and graceful, she possessed an exquisite charm.
Shang Ao'er had been busy with her studies lately and only learned in the past few days that her favorite ship, the "Shang-Liang Couple," had finally sailed.
She sighed for the hundredth time that day, "Little Uncle, when are you going to marry Little Auntie and bring her home? If you do, I won't have to go to school for the remaining few months; I can just have her stay home and tutor me for my exams."
Shang Yucheng didn't object to the title "Little Auntie," but Gong Nian, who was hugging his leg, refused to accept it.
Gong Nian protested, "Ao'er Sister, let me teach you. You can only call someone 'Little Auntie' after she marries Brother A-Cheng."
"I don't need a little brat like you to educate me," Shang Ao'er retorted sharply. "You just need to remember that I will definitely never call an ex-fiancée whose engagement has been called off 'Little Auntie'!"
When Liang Jinshang returned, she happened to run into Shang Ao'er and Gong Nian bickering with each other, showing no regard for seniority.
Finding them utterly tiresome, Shang Yucheng picked up Gong Nian, presumably to return her to Gong Xueyuan.
Shang Ao'er complained to Liang Jinshang, "That kid is seriously annoying, right?"
Liang Jinshang nodded silently.
Feeling as though she had found a kindred spirit, Shang Ao'er began to complain about how infuriating Gong Nian was.
Even though the brat was young, her seniority was higher than Shang Ao'er's, so she always used her status to bully her and ride roughshod over Shang Ao'er.
Liang Jinshang found it quite amusing. Even someone as pampered and cherished as Shang Ao'er actually had moments where she was overshadowed by others.
"However, why is Shang Yucheng so nice to her?"
Liang Jinshang had been curious about this question for a long time.
Aside from being prettier than the average child, Gong Nian's temperament and disposition were not particularly endearing.
"It seems to be because of Gong Nian's mother, right?" Shang Ao'er wasn't entirely certain either. "That aunt took care of my Little Uncle a lot when he was little."
Was that how it was?
Liang Jinshang had heard vague rumors that a massive tragedy had struck Shang Yucheng's family when he was a child.
After his younger sister died in an accident, his mother remarried and his father took up ascetic cultivation.
Although both of Shang Yucheng's parents were still alive, he had actually lived through the years feeling like an orphan.
It made complete sense for him to project his maternal affection onto someone who had taken on a mother's role in caring for him.
Yet Liang Jinshang found it hard to imagine what kind of extraordinary qualities a woman could possibly possess to raise a pair of spoiled and arrogant sisters like the Gong family girls.
She couldn't help asking, "You said Gong Xueyuan's mother was very good to Shang Yucheng. What kind of person was she?"
Shang Ao'er opened her mouth to reply, but before she could, Shang Yucheng's own voice came from behind them.
He pointed out indifferently, "It's Gong Nian's mother."
Liang Jinshang turned her head abruptly.
She felt the awkwardness of being caught red-handed while gossiping behind someone's back.
Compared to Liang Jinshang's embarrassment, Shang Ao'er fired back, "As if Gong Nian's mother isn't Gong Xueyuan's mother as well."
"Of course she is," Shang Yucheng said, looking at Liang Jinshang with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "But if you say Gong Xueyuan's name too many times, someone is going to throw a tantrum again."
Shang Ao'er made a disgusted "Eww!" sound, indicating she couldn't stomach the cloying sweetness.
A moment later, however, Shang Ao'er came running back.
"Little Uncle, Little Uncle! Something's happened to Sister!"
There was indeed a slight commotion over by the banquet hall, and Shang Yucheng strode off immediately.
Both men had exceptionally long legs, but Chao Jingyu reacted a fraction of a second too late and fell behind after following for a couple of steps.
From a distance, he saw that Liang Jinshang had seemingly spilled some wine on herself, soaking her outfit, though it wasn't a major crisis.
So he paused.
Sometimes, being a step too late meant being a step too late.
Shang Yucheng walked over, taking off his suit jacket as he moved, but before he could get close, someone else had already beaten him to it by taking off their own suit jacket and wrapping Liang Jinshang in it.
Perhaps due to the suddenness of the event, Liang Jinshang looked somewhat startled.
The person also very chivalrously held Liang Jinshang's shoulders, half-embracing her, and gave her a reassuring pat.
